In this article, we present a classic approach to the mathematical modeling of epidemic processes, starting with the Kermack-McKendrick model, and ending with modifications of the simplest models that are taken into account when describing the dynamics of the COVID-19 pandemic. We explain the idea of the basic reproduction number R0, and how to determine this parameter using a simple example.
